Coming from a long line of bankers and brokers, Rupal Bhansali grew up on stock stories instead of fairy tales. Eager to enter the world of finance, she learned accounting by the age of 16 and began working in the field right out of high school. By age 24, she had edited prospectuses, calculated residual values on lease portfolios and learned how to trade foreign exchange.

During her college days, Rupal was known for challenging conventional wisdom. To break the cyclical habit of students job-hunting upon graduation, she encouraged them to consider entrepreneurship as a path to success by launching a competition called "Mind Your Own Business".

Rupal learned the meaning of volatility firsthand, when she came to the United States to pursue her MBA at the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y., in 1991. The Indian rupee had just devalued by a massive 40%, and stock markets tumbled worldwide due to a global recession. Fortunately, she had earned a Rotary Foundation Scholarship that was not subject to currency risk or equity market fluctuations, which meant she could still fund her education. That formative shock lesson continues to guide her risk management philosophy today.

After earning her MBA, Rupal initially worked on emerging markets and then later on developed markets around the world. Although unusual for a long-only manager, her buy-side career began on the long-short side at Soros, where she sharpened her focus on absolute returns and downside protection. By age 30, she was managing money as an analyst/portfolio manager at Oppenheimer Capital in New York. In 2001, Rupal joined Mackay Shields, where she led the international equities division and enjoyed a distinguished career for 10 years. Fittingly, in September 2009, Forbes International named her a Global Guru. Rupal's unconventional investment views and non-consensus stock picks have also been widely featured in leading publications such as The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Financial Advisor and the Australian Financial Review.

Rupal joined Ariel in 2011 as Chief Investment Officer for International and Global Equities. She found a kindred spirit in Ariel, where her investment philosophy of applying independent thinking and owning high-conviction, concentrated portfolios coincided with the firm's philosophy.

Having grown up, lived, studied and worked in multiple geographies, Rupal has a keen understanding of the socio-economic-political environments and cultural attributes of various countries in the world. She has several decades of experience analyzing corporate strategies and business models of thousands of companies in a variety of industries operating in North America, Europe and Japan as well as Latin America, Eastern Europe and Asia.

It is clear, Rupal was born to invest. (Bio courtesey Ariel Investments.)

2022 Berkshire System Summit

Thursday, May 5, 2022
9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
University of Nebraska at Omaha, Scott Conference Center - across the street from Mammel Hall

Berkshire System Summit is an in-depth discussion on the unique culture, principles and methods used by Warren Buffett's conglomerate to become America's 2nd largest company (by sales) over 50 years. Coined by Vice Chairman Charlie Munger, 'the Berkshire System' was outlined by him in a 2015 shareholder letter in celebration of the company's 50th anniversary. To understand the system is to understand Berkshire Hathaway, one of the world's most admired companies. Often copied but never duplicated, these are some of the areas the Summit will explore:

  • Extraordinary Capital Allocation: Investing in pieces of companies through the stock market as well as wholly owned subsidiaries using value investment methods; Buying old economy industries; Purchasing with the intention to keep not trade; Focusing on durable competitive advantages; Centralizing capital and reallocating to highest and best use; Being paid (with float) to hold capital to invest
  • Unique Corporate Values Culture: Never losing a subsidiary CEO to a competitor; Gold standard of corporate governance; 370,000 employees with only 25 at headquarters; a system of deserved management trust; the buyer of choice; Fort Knox of capital when markets need it most; Employees are always in a position to do the right thing; Well defined management succession plan that is deep within the organization
  • Passionate and Talented Managers: A management team assembled over time that prefers work over retirement; Fair manager compensation; Berkshire CEOs selected based on merit not seniority; No retirement required and often discouraged

Genius of Warren Buffett Course FAQs/Events

Genius of Warren Buffett Course FAQ:

Q. What are the differences between the Genius of Warren Buffett Fall and Spring Course?

A. While the fall and spring courses cover the same material, share the same syllabus and include catered meals, the principle difference is the amount of course hours.
Although both sessions are 3 days, the spring course is a total of 24 hours (8 hours per day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 am to 5 pm plus an additional bonus day and 6 hours of the Berkshire System Summit). The spring seminar is popular with international Berkshire Shareholders traveling to Omaha the first week of May to immerse themselves in an advanced study of Warren Buffett. The concentration of like-minded investors representing all continents and over 40 countries is a one of a kind experience. Some have repeated the spring course as many as 4 times.
The fall course is a total of 18 hours (6 hours per day from 3 pm to 9 pm on Thursday and Friday and 8 am to 2 pm on Saturday). This session is designed for the busy executive, professional investment manager, or private investor seeking a better understanding of Warren Buffett's investment principles and methods. Many Omaha executives enrolled in the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Executive MBA program select the fall course as an elective towards their degree. The first weekend in October is also popular with families and time sensitive investors wishing to fly into Omaha on Thursday morning, stay two nights to complete the course and fly home on Saturday afternoon.
Special Berkshire subsidiary tours, welcome lunch/dinner, introduction to investment research reports, guest speakers, investment pitch contest and UNO Certificate of Completion are the same for the Spring and Fall courses.

Borsheims' Adrienne Fay shares her marketing expertise

By Maria Nevada

Diamonds sparkled in the light as visitors explored Omaha-based luxury jewelry store Borsheims.

For the participants in the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Genius of Warren Buffett Executive MBA course, the October 5 tour was a master class in the importance of detail and strategy. Led by Adrienne Fay, "Borsheims'" Director of Marketing and Business Sales, the tour allowed visitors to gain insight on selling a brand.

At one point during the tour, Fay ushered the group inside a semi-enclosed area that displayed and highlighted the most prized pieces in the Borsheims' inventory. The space gives customers a sense of privacy and exclusivity, Fay says.

The site visit is a bi-annual "skills check-in" for Fay to stay informed on every aspect of the store, its history and progress. She points out the details invisible to the untrained eye that create a consumer journey.

When customers enter the store, they are gently misted with a relaxing scent that reinforces Borsheims' branding. Fay says this tactic is called scent marketing. Everything down to the packaging of the products, Fays says, creates "moments." To improve customer experience, the company also plans to put new carpet down to remove the subtle discomfort from standing on a hard floor. "Sometimes it's hard to see past the beautiful jewelry or the really unique things that make our store visibly beautiful," Fay says. Borsheims develops goals and strategies that define everyday business decisions "to ensure that our business stays strong and vibrant." Borsheims offers a glamorous experience and luxury goods- but at a discount, Fay says. It's a business model maintained through various methods. As part of the Berkshire Hathaway family, the company receives direction from Warren Buffett. Every year, Buffett writes a note to the company. It's simple, concise and shows how Borsheims is part of the Berkshire Hathaway experience. The company even sets up a pop-up store every year at the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholders Meeting, held the first weekend in May.

Previous Genius of Warren Buffett course participants suggested guest speakers include a Berkshire subsidiary Chief Financial Officer and a Chief Marketing Officer to highlight the depth of the Berkshire culture. Fay has been a course lecturer for five years now.

Like the course participants, Fay considers herself a life-long learner.

"It's really wonderful," Fay says. "It's probably one of the hardest talks that I do but is the most rewarding as well."
